Power outages
How long do power outages last in your state?
When the power went out in 2025, it stayed out about 3.3 hours on average across the US. In 2024, a year of hurricanes, it was 6.7 hours, and 22.1 hours in South Carolina. Riding out a 6.7-hour outage with a fridge, Wi‑Fi and four LED bulbs takes about 910 Wh of battery.

Average outage = CAIDI, minutes per interruption; hours without power = SAIDI, minutes per customer per year; both with major events, EIA’s “any method” figures. Battery: a fridge, Wi‑Fi and four LED bulbs (115.4 W) for the longer of the two years’ average outage, ÷ 0.85. Station: the cheapest in stock here that runs that load that long, own draw included, and can start a fridge (900 W). Maker prices, Oct 26, 2026, unless dated. Checkout price applies.
What the numbers mean
Utilities report reliability figures to the U.S. Energy Information Administration; two of them are used here. SAIDI is the total time the average customer was without power in a year. CAIDI is how long an outage lasted, on average, once it happened. Both here include major events such as hurricanes and ice storms, which is why 2024 stands out in the Southeast: the US average for the year was 10.2 hours without power against 4.4 in 2025. (EIA’s Today in Energy article on 2024 rounds its own measure to about 11 hours; this page uses EIA’s “any method” state table, which gives 10.2.) Without major events, the 2025 average was 2 hours (EIA, Table 11.3).
In some states not every utility reports, so the figures cover only part of the customers; EIA’s table lists the share for each state.
These are averages. One storm can cut power for days in one town while other outages last minutes, so size a battery for the longest outage you want to ride out, not the average.
What the essentials draw
An average US fridge uses about 70.4 W averaged over a day (EIA), a modem and router about 11 W (NRDC), and four 60 W‑equivalent LED bulbs about 34 W (Philips): 115.4 W together. Add a CPAP at 22 W with the humidifier (ResMed) if you use one. For your own devices, use the calculator.

Quick answers
How long does the average power outage last in the US?
About 3.3 hours in 2025 and 6.7 hours in 2024, counting major events such as hurricanes, by EIA’s reliability data (CAIDI, minutes per interruption). Over a whole year, the average customer was without power about 4.4 hours in 2025 and 10.2 hours in 2024.
Which state has the longest power outages?
In 2024, South Carolina: an outage lasted about 22.1 hours on average, with hurricanes included. In 2025 it was Michigan, about 7.9 hours. West Virginia had the most hours without power in 2025 in total, about 16.9 per customer.
What size power station do I need for a typical outage?
For a fridge, Wi‑Fi and four LED bulbs (about 115.4 W together), about 910 Wh covers the 2024 US average outage of 6.7 hours: 115.4 W × 6.7 h ÷ 0.85. Averages hide long storms; size for the longest outage you want to ride out.
