Solar panels

Solar panels for power stations

11 panels from BLUETTI, EcoFlow and ALLPOWERS, and how long each one takes to refill that maker’s stations.

Sun hours = Wh ÷ (0.75 × panel watts, capped by the station’s solar input)

Sun hours to full with one panel, by our math. * Held below the panel’s rating by the station’s current limit.

Apex 300 2,765 Wh36.9 h18.4 h10.5 h7.4 h

Sun hours to full with one panel, by our math. “no”: the specs don’t match (Elite 30 V2 + 350W panel: its 44 V open-circuit voltage is above the 28 V input limit; Elite 30 V2 + SORA 500: its 49.1 V open-circuit voltage is above the 28 V input limit). * Held below the panel’s rating by the station’s current limit. † The panel’s short-circuit current is above the station’s amp limit, so it may charge a little slower. The Apex 300 manual limits current to 8.2 A at low input voltages, so the SP200L (10.8 A short-circuit current) can charge slower than shown.

EcoFlow panels on EcoFlow stations

Station100W flexibleNextGen 160W175W rigidNextGen 220W
RIVER 3 Plus 286 Wh3.8 h2.4 h2.2 h1.7 h
DELTA 3 Max Plus 2,048 Wh27.3 h17.1 h15.6 h12.4 h
DELTA 2 Max 2,048 Wh27.3 h17.1 h15.6 h12.4 h

Sun hours to full with one panel, by our math. On the DELTA 3 Max Plus, EcoFlow gives 1,000 W in total for its two inputs and no per-input figure.

We check each pair against the panel’s open-circuit voltage and the station’s solar input range, and cap the watts at the input’s watt and amp limits. The 75% is our assumption for heat, angle and charging losses, the same as on solar recharge time. We don’t test panels.

Quick answers

Can I use another brand’s solar panel?

Often, if its open-circuit voltage fits the station’s solar input range and you have the right cable (most panels use MC4 plugs). The station limits how many watts it takes. Check both manuals; the maker’s own panels are the simplest match.

How many sun hours does a panel give in a day?

It depends on place and season. Our times count strong-sun hours at 75% of the panel’s rating; clouds, heat, winter sun and shade add time.

Why does a bigger panel not always charge faster?

Each station caps solar input by watts and by amps. A 500 W panel on a 500 W input with a 10 A limit can be held to about 400 W, for example.

Do I need more than one panel?

Only to reach a higher solar input than one panel gives. Wiring panels together changes voltage or current, so follow the station manual’s limits.

More add-ons: extra batteries and car chargers.
