Can a power station run a furnace?

A gas or oil furnace needs electricity for its blower. Generator charts put a 1/3 hp furnace fan at 700–1,000 W, so a 1,000 Wh station runs it about 51 min–1.2 h nonstop, if the station can start it. An electric furnace is far beyond any station here.

How long does each station run a furnace fan?

Wh × 0.85 ÷ watts, fan running nonstop; it cycles with the thermostat, so real hours are longer. “May not start”: the station’s surge, or its output if none is listed, is below about 1,800 W. “Start may be tight”: below the 2,100 W in one chart. What a furnace fan draws

Generator charts give planning figures for the blower of a gas or fuel-oil furnace. Honda lists 1,000 W running and 1,800 W to start for a 1/3 hp fan, and 1,200 W running and 2,500 W to start for 1/2 hp (Honda). The utility EWEB lists a 1/3 hp furnace fan at 700 W running plus 1,400 W more to start, about 2,100 W in total (EWEB). Your furnace’s label gives its amps: amps × 120 is roughly the watts.

Getting power to it

Never plug a backup into a wall outlet or connect it to house wiring. A furnace wired into the panel needs a transfer switch (Idaho Power), installed by a professional (PGE). If yours plugs into an outlet, check its manual before running it from a station.

Never run a fuel generator indoors, and keep carbon monoxide alarms working in any outage.

Quick answers

Can a 1,000 Wh power station run a furnace?

The blower of a gas or oil furnace, often: at 700–1,000 W for a 1/3 hp fan it runs about 51 min–1.2 h nonstop, longer as the thermostat cycles it. The station must also cover the start, about 1,800–2,100 W in generator charts.

How do I connect a furnace to a power station?

If the furnace plugs into an outlet, check its manual first. If it is wired into the panel, any backup needs a transfer switch installed by a professional; never connect power to house wiring yourself.
