Well pumps

Can a power station run a well pump?

Sometimes, for a small 120 V pump. Starting it is the hard part: about 3,000 W for a 1/3 hp pump in one generator chart. And many well pumps run on 240 V and are wired into the panel, so they need a transfer switch.

Which stations can start and run a 1/3 hp well pump?

Wh × 0.85 ÷ watts, pump running nonstop; it runs only while water is drawn. “May not start”: the station’s surge, or its output if none is listed, is below about 3,000 W. Wh × 0.85 ÷ watts, nonstop. “May not start”: surge (or output, if none is listed) below about 3,000 W, the starting figure in the EWEB chart. What a well pump draws

The utility EWEB’s generator chart lists a 1/3 hp water well pump at 1,000 W running plus 2,000 W more to start, about 3,000 W in total (EWEB). Idaho Power’s generator guide lists a well pump at 750 W (Idaho Power). Portland General Electric warns that the start can reach six times the running watts, and that a variable frequency drive or reduced-voltage starter can lower it (PGE). Bigger pumps draw more: check your pump’s label.

240 V and wiring

Portland General Electric says well pumps often need 220 V, though some need only 110 V, and that most are wired into the electrical panel, so a backup connects through a transfer switch installed by a professional (PGE). A station’s regular 120 V outlets can’t run a 240 V pump; the BLUETTI Apex 300 is one station here that lists 240 V output, so check your station’s specs. Never connect any backup to house wiring yourself (Idaho Power).

Water without the pump

PGE suggests storing about a gallon of water per person per day (PGE). Filling jugs and the bathtub before a storm can be easier than powering the pump.

Quick answers

Can a portable power station run a well pump?

A small 120 V pump, if the station can start it: about 3,000 W in one generator chart for a 1/3 hp pump. Twelve of the 18 stations here cover 3,000 W; a utility warns the start can reach six times the running watts. Many well pumps run on 240 V and are wired into the panel, which needs a transfer switch.

How long will a power station run a well pump?

The pump only runs while water is drawn. At about 1,000 W, each hour of pumping uses 1,000 Wh, about 51 min on a 1,000 Wh station.
